To hoop or not to hoop?
Whilst an embroidery hoop is not essential, it can make things much easier with some thinner fabrics, keeping it taut whilst you work.  On thicker fabrics like denim it's not needed.  If you don't have an embroidery hoop it's a good investment.

Skill Level: Beginner

Stitches Used: Straight, running, back, satin, blanket, stem, anchor, woven wheel, and French knot.
